The House of One - A Multi-Religious Building

Updated: Aug 19, 2022

Hello everyone, hope all are fine. I know that our team has not been publishing blogs for a few weeks, because we were travelling during the school vacations. But this is one for the moment. We have discussed about 2 religious shrines that were built right next to each other, or amazing and mind-blowing shrines like the Vaishno Devi Temple and so on, but in Berlin a multi-religious building, called the House of One is being built which can unite the Christians, Muslims, and Jews under a single roof.

The weekly Die Zeit referred to the temple as Germany’s “most spectacular construction project.” It is believed to have been built on the grounds of oldest church of Berlin which stood for over 750 years. In the building are the prayers rooms of a mosque, synagogue, and a church. The house makes it possible to pray in one's own tradition as well as to meet one another and to learn,. The House of One began ten years ago as a project of small communities; with the Evangelical parish of St. Petri-St. Mary for Christianity, the Jewish community in Berlin and the Abraham-Geiger College as a Jewish partner, as well as Forum Dialogue for Islam.

Let us now understand how it all started. The idea of the House of One emerged from an architectural competition that was held, and the winner of it was this building. “Each of the singular spaces is designed according to the religious needs, the particularities of each faith. There are for instance two levels in the mosque and the synagogue, but there’s only one level in the church. We have also created a place to wash feet in the mosque.”, stated one of the architects, Wilfried Kuehn. With this wonderful idea created by the country of Berlin, we hope that this structure, after it is built would give out a positive vibe and help the societies. It not only would help the people, but also inspire the future generations and small architects to build such multi-religious buildings for the world.

Karen Armstrong righty said that “All religious are designed to teach us how to live joyfully, serenely, and kindly, in the midst of suffering.”
